God’s mercy, grace, love, and kindness have been evident, extensive, and overwhelming to His people at Hampton Park Baptist Church through His faithful provision. We began as Hampton Avenue Baptist Church with Reverend C. L. Norman as founding pastor and more than 40 charter members in 1940.
The congregation’s first meeting place was a basement with a 12- foot by 12-foot concrete slab. Humble it was, but God was there. “The Stone Church,” a building constructed of 325 tons of Georgia granite was finally completed in 1944.
God used Pastor Norman to nurture His growing flock until he retired in 1963. David Yearick began as interim pastor in August 1963 and was called to be the full-time pastor in January 1964.
In 1968, the Lord provided 27 acres of sloping, wooded land on State Park Road at the foot of Paris Mountain, and in 1970 construction of the new church facilities began. The move necessitated a change in name, and the church became Hampton Park Baptist Church (Hampton from the old location and Park from the new).
The first building completed housed the new Hampton Park Christian School, which God a llowed to open in September and He provided 90 students. Then on October 4, 1970, with great rejoicing in God’s provision, the congregation held its first services in the new facilities. The present 1,400 seat auditorium was built in 1978.
In 2000, the le adership was looking for a man of God to succeed Pastor Yearick as Senior Pastor. After much prayer, the leadership knew that God wanted Drew Conley to shepherd His flock at Hampton Park. God gave transitional grace and in 2003 he became the senior pastor.
Under Pastor Conley’s leadership, Hampton Park is striving to accomplish the mission that we believe God has given us. Therefore, for God’s glory and by the power of the Spirit, HPBC exists to display and to proclaim to all people everywhere the good news that God is cre ating a people for His name from every nation, kindred, and tongue through the redemptive work of the only Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
