Concerning our beliefs on counseling:

  • We believe the Bible is our final authority, and spiritual change happens only when people respond to the work of the Holy Spirit and the truth they find in God’s revealed Word.
  • We believe godly wisdom does not neglect extrabiblical knowledge, methods, approaches, and networks that do not contradict God’s Word. We believe that some needs are complex and multi-faceted, and may involve physical, emotional, rational, volitional, relational, and spiritual factors, and therefore may require a multi-faceted response and/or referral to medical or other professionals. An effective Biblical counselor at HP will possess a blend of humility and demonstrated diagnostic skill and will avoid simplistic or dogmatic responses to complex and sometimes unclear issues.
  • Initially, this position will focus on ministering to the needs of our own body, both directly and via training and developing lay counselors. Eventually, it may develop into an outreach ministry.

With these emphases and clarifications, we affirm the Confessional Statement of the Biblical Counseling Coalition, found here.
