Official Proposed Update to Statement of Faith (from Pastoral Body)

The Holy Scriptures
We believe in the verbal (every word) and plenary (complete) inspiration of the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments;1 that they are a perfect treasure of heavenly instruction with salvation as their purpose;2 that they were written by men carried along by the Holy Spirit;3 that they are the final authority for faith and life,4 inerrant in the original writings, infallible and God-breathed;5 and that they are the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, interpretations, and opinions shall be tried.6

The Godhead
We believe in one triune God whose name is Yahweh,1 perfect in His unique attributes (eternality, immutability, self-existence, self-sufficiency, omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence)2 and moral attributes (holiness, truthfulness, righteousness, justice, love, goodness, grace, mercy, wisdom);3 that He is the Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler of all things,4 eternally existing in three persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit),5 co-eternal in being, co-identical in nature, co-equal in power and glory,6 executing distinct but harmonious offices in the work of creation, providence, and redemption.7

We believe in God the Father, an infinite, personal spirit1 whose fatherhood pertains to His relationship within the Trinity,2 His special relationship with those who become His children through faith in Jesus,3 and His attitude toward all of His creation;4 that He reigns with providential care, governing and disposing all things according to the purpose of His grace;5 that He hears and answers prayer;6 and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through faith in Jesus Christ.7

We believe in the deity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, fully God and fully man;1 that He is God manifested in the flesh, conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary;2 that He lived a sinless life on earth;3 that He died on Calvary's cross, shedding His blood as the only satisfactory sacrifice for sinners and payment for sin;4 that He was buried and rose bodily from the dead;5 that He ascended to Heaven and is now seated at the Father’s right hand in Heaven interceding for us;6 and that He is coming again to gather His saints and judge the world.7

We believe that the Holy Spirit, called the Helper, is the third person of the Holy Trinity and is co-equal with God the Father and God the Son;1 that He convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment;2 that He is the supernatural agent in regeneration;3 that He indwells all believers and seals them unto the day of redemption;4 that He illuminates, empowers, teaches, and guides believers;5 and that He gives gifts to believers for the edification of the church.6

Creation
We believe that in the beginning it pleased God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,1 for the manifestation of the glory of His eternal power and divine nature,2 to create by His word out of nothing the heavens and the earth, and all things therein, visible or invisible, in the space of six days, evening and morning, without any evolutionary process, and all very good;3 that man was formed from the dust of the ground by a direct act of God;4 and that all men are descended from the historical Adam and Eve, first parents of the entire human race.5

Man
We believe that God created man in His own image to enjoy fellowship with man, and man with Him, through which man would glorify Him; that He made them male and female, breathed into him the breath of life, and gave them dominion over the earth;1 that He formed Eve to be a helper fit for Adam and to be his companion for life;2 and that He joined one man and one woman together in marriage, establishing for all time a monogamous pattern of spiritual, emotional, and physical union.3

The Fall
We believe that man was created in holiness, subject to his Maker;1 that he fell by voluntary transgression from that holy and happy state of fellowship with God;2 that consequently, all creation was subjected to death, suffering, and futility, and all mankind are now sinners,3 not by constraint, but by choice;4 that he is by nature utterly void of that holiness required by the law of God, positively inclined to evil; and that he is therefore under just condemnation to eternal ruin,5 without defense or excuse.6

Marriage, Family, and Sexuality
We believe that God established the institution of marriage in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve;1 that this institution of monogamous marriage between male and female is not only the foundation of the family and basic structure of human society, but pictures Christ’s union with His people through a male groom and female bride; that for these reasons, marriage is exclusively the union of one genetic male and one genetic female;2 that an authority structure exists within the family: the Lord is the Head of the home, the husband is the head of the wife, and children are to obey and honor their parents;3 that God gave the gift and pleasure of marital intimacy for the mutual benefit of husband and wife, for the bearing of children, and for the prevention of immorality;4 that Christians are to marry only other Christians or remain single as God enables them;5 that children are to be seen as gifts from God and are to be raised for God’s glory and service;6 and that deviations from God’s plan for human sexuality include all sexual activity outside the covenant of marriage, including adultery, pornography, incest, bestiality, homosexuality, same-sex marriage, transgenderism, pedophilia, polygamy, and polyamory, and, therefore, are sinful and harmful practices, contrary to God’s plan for the individual, family, and society.7

Salvation
Repentance, Faith, and Justification
We believe salvation is a gift of eternal life wholly by the grace of God apart from merit or works;1 that a person is saved when he turns to God with sincere confession and repentance,2 and faith in Jesus Christ as Lord, relying on Him alone as the only and all-sufficient Savior;3 and that all who believe in Him are justified (declared righteous) on the basis of His perfect righteousness, substitutionary death by shedding His blood on the cross, and bodily resurrection.4

The Freeness of Salvation
We believe that the blessings of salvation are made free to all by the gospel;1 that it is the immediate duty of all to accept them by a willing and obedient faith;2 and that nothing prevents the salvation of sinners but their own inherent depravity and voluntary suppression of the truth.3

- Matthew 11:20; 23:37; John 3:19; 5:39-40; Acts 13:46; Romans 1:18-20
Regeneration
We believe that in order to be saved sinners must be regenerated (born again);1 that regeneration consists in giving a holy disposition to the heart and mind;2 that it is done in a way beyond our comprehension by the power of the Holy Spirit, in connection with divine truth,3 so as to make sinners into a new creation, securing their voluntary obedience to the gospel;4 and that its proper evidence appears in the fruits of repentance, faith, and newness of life.5

Election
We believe that election is the eternal purpose of God, according to which He graciously regenerates, sanctifies, and saves sinners;1 that being perfectly consistent with the free agency of man, it includes all the divine and human activities leading to that purpose;2 that it is an exceedingly glorious display of God’s sovereign goodness and steadfast love, being infinitely free, wise, holy, merciful, and unchangeable;3 that it utterly excludes boasting and promotes humility, love, prayer, praise, trust in God, and active imitation of His free mercy;4 that it encourages obedience to the Great Commission in the highest degree and guarantees its success;5 that its effects will be seen in all who truly believe the gospel;6 that it strengthens Christian comfort and hope;7 and that it calls believers to confirm their election through diligent effort to grow in godliness.8

- Philippians 2:12-13; 3:12; Hebrews 6:11; 2 Peter 1:3-11
Perseverance and Preservation
We believe that all the truly redeemed of God will endure in faith to the end of their earthly lives;1 that their persevering faith in Christ distinguishes them from superficial professors;2 that a special Providence watches over them, keeping them by God's power through faith unto salvation;3 and that they are thus eternally secure in Christ forever.4

- John 6:35-40; 10:26-29; Romans 8:1; Colossians 3:4; 1 John 5:13; Jude 24-25
Spirit Baptism and Indwelling
We believe that the Holy Spirit baptizes all true believers into Christ and indwells them from the moment of conversion,1 and that believers are able to walk in the life-giving power of the indwelling Spirit from conversion onward.2
- Matthew 3:11; John 1:33; 3:5-7; Acts 2:38-39; 15:8-9; Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Galatians 4:6; Ephesians 1:13-14
- Romans 6:3-11; Galatians 5:22-26; Ephesians 5:18
Sanctification
We believe that sanctification is the divine setting apart of the believer unto God accomplished in a threefold manner: first, an eternal act of God, based upon redemption in Christ, establishing the believer in a position of holiness at the moment he trusts the Savior;1 second, a continuing process in the saint as the Holy Spirit applies the Word of God to the inner man, producing increasing holiness;2 and third, the final accomplishment of this process at the return of Christ.3

- John 17:17; 2 Corinthians 3:18; 4:16; Galatians 5:16-26; Ephesians 3:16-17; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8; 5:23-24; Hebrews 10:14; 2 Peter 1:5-10
- Romans 8:29-30; Philippians 1:6; 3:20-21; 2 Peter 1:3, 11; 1 John 3:2
The Church
We believe that the universal church is a living spiritual body of which all regenerated persons are members;1 that the visible, New Testament church is autonomous local congregations of baptized believers,2 mutually accountable by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the gospel,3 voluntarily united to worship, edify, observe the ordinances, fellowship, and serve;4 that the only Head is Christ, by His Word through the Holy Spirit;5 that the officers of the local church are pastors/elders/overseers and deacons;6 that while both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the office of pastor/elder/overseer is limited to men as stipulated by Scripture;7 that the mission of the church is to proclaim and to display to all people the good news of redemption through Jesus Christ;8 and that the congregation decides matters of membership, government, doctrine, and discipline.9

Baptism
We believe that the biblical ordinance of baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,1 a solemn and beautiful symbol of the believer's union with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection;2 that it publicly identifies the believer with Christ and His people;3 that every believer should be baptized because of the example and command of our Lord;4 and that it is a prerequisite to the privileges of church membership and the Lord’s Supper.5

- Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 2:41-42
The Lord’s Supper
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ gave the Lord's Supper as an ordinance to the church to remember and to proclaim His death till He comes;1 that the elements of bread and the fruit of the vine are a memorial of Christ’s once-for-all offering up of Himself on the cross to inaugurate the New Covenant in His blood;2 and that the Lord's table, following self-examination, is open to all regenerated and baptized believers living in obedient fellowship with the Lord Jesus, a bond and pledge of their communion with Him and with each other.3

Angels
We believe that angels are powerful, yet finite, created spirit beings who can take visible or physical form;1 that they serve a variety of God-appointed tasks such as guarding, protecting, ministering, executing judgment, worshiping, announcing good news, and gathering the elect at the end of the age;2 that certain angels joined the angelic being Satan in his rebellion against God, being used as his agents to accomplish his purposes on the earth;3 and that all fallen angels will suffer the punishment of eternal fire, while all other angels will continue to serve God and His people in the New Heaven and New Earth.4

- Matthew 25:41; 1 Corinthians 15:24; Revelation 5:11-12; 21:12
We believe that Satan (adversary), the Devil (slanderer), is a finite, created being, a fallen angel,1 the preeminent tempter whose objective is to deceive, to accuse, and to destroy;2 that he was instrumental in the Fall of man;3 that he is the chief enemy of God and man;4 that he blinds unbelievers and energizes their disobedience;5 that he wars against believers, but that they can resist him in the superior power of Christ;6 and that his final destiny is eternal punishment in the lake of fire.7

The Intermediate State
We believe that the bodies of men after death return to dust;1 that the souls of the righteous made perfect in holiness are received into heaven, where they are with Christ and await the full redemption of their bodies;2 and that the souls of the wicked are cast into hell (Hades), where they remain in torment and await the final judgment.3

The Return of Christ
We believe in the visible and bodily return of Jesus to this earth to gather His saints and to judge the world;1 that the time of His coming is not revealed;2 and that therefore it is the duty of all believers to live in readiness for His coming and by diligence in good works to show to all people the reality and power of believers’ hope in Christ and His kingdom.3

The Eternal State
We believe in the bodily resurrection of all men, the saved to everlasting life, and the unsaved to judgment and everlasting punishment;1 that the souls of the unbelievers await the resurrection of the unjust when, soul and body, they shall be cast into the Lake of Fire to suffer everlasting punishment;2 that the souls of the redeemed await the resurrection of the just when soul and body will be glorified forever with the Lord;3 and that the eternal dwelling place for God’s people will be the New Heaven and New Earth where righteousness dwells, sin and its curse are no more, and God Himself will be with them as their God.4
